If a Tree Falls in a Forest book collects interviews with Lithuanian and Dutch artists on artistic experiments and scientific research to explore contours of human sensoria. Both an unfinished hypothesis and a reference to an oft-discussed question—if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?—it leaves us with a question—what constitutes reality? Think about high-pitched sounds of insects, chemical flows, wavelengths of light that do not reach our retina, Earth’s magnetic field, and other dynamics of the world that happen beyond human perception. The collected conversations with the artists suggest new modes of attention, addressing perception and sensual awareness in nonhuman, technological, and human dimensions.
